Halloween is a magical time of year! Whether you’re passing out Skittles on your front porch or trick-or-treating with your grandkids, here’s some important information to ensure Halloween goes off without a hitch.
Columbus Trick-or-Treat Guide for 2017:
When is Trick-or-Treat?
In 2015, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission set a unified trick-or-treat night for the Columbus area to keep children and pedestrians safe. Their resolution decided that trick-or-treat would be held on Oct. 31 unless the date falls on a weekend. In that case, it’s held on the previous Thursday. While the majority of Columbus sticks to this date, some communities have opted for Oct. 28 and timeframes often vary.

Watch for Blue Pumpkins
You may have noticed in previous years that some kids carry a teal pumpkin to collect their treats instead of the traditional orange pumpkin. Teal pumpkins signal food allergies, meaning it may be a good idea to have an alternative, non-food treat prepared for these children. The Teal Pumpkin Project is designed to raise awareness of food allergies and promote the inclusion of all trick-or-treaters throughout the Halloween season. This way, you can rest easy knowing you didn’t give a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup to a trick-or-treater with a peanut allergy.
What to Wear
If you’re looking to be adventurous with your costume, you can opt for any of 2017’s best selling outfits. For a scary costume, try a clown! Stephen King’s IT broke box-office records, so it’s no surprise clowns are a favorite this year. If you want a less terrifying costume try Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Wonder Woman, Game of Thrones Characters and Eleven from the hit Netflix show Stranger Things.
